Bodega La Geria farms the ash-covered slopes of La Geria, in the municipality of Tías, where vines grow in individual hollows dug into volcanic lapilli. The estate dates back to the 19th century and has been run by the Rijo family since the 1990s; it is now one of the island's larger producers, with room for around 450,000 litres — mostly stainless steel, a smaller share in oak — and an annual output of roughly 300,000 bottles.
Malvasía Volcánica is the axis of the range: dry, semi-sweet and sweet versions, alongside a Moscatel, young reds, a rosado and organic bottlings. Under the La Geria and Manto labels you can move from everyday wines to limited-edition sweet wines aged for longer, a good way to see how this grape develops.
The visit takes in the vineyard and the winery and ends with a tasting; guided tours need booking ahead, and the Taberna La Cepa lets you stay on afterwards. Worth stopping if you want to see how vines are grown in ash cones and compare malvasía styles side by side in one sitting.
